It is a university program in which intensive English courses are offered at the University of Witwatersrand during the intersemestral periods of the UNAM (January-summer in South Africa-and June-winter in South Africa-).

The CEM UNAM-South Africa offers English courses for general purposes (development of the four skills: oral comprehension, listening comprehension, oral and written expression and interaction) and English courses for academic purposes.

° Course 3 Weeks: Development of Oral Skills and Academic Writing in English.
° Course 7 Weeks: Development of Communication Skills in English.

The course has a cost of:

  • Course of 3 weeks:
    • 1100* USD for undergraduate and postgraduate students with valid credential.
    • 1200* USD for alumni and UNAM staff.
    • 1300* USD for external university community.

    *Costs are shown in US dollars and include:

    • Course of 75 hours
    • Course material
    • 3 days Safari (all include)
    • 3 cultural activities

  • Course of 7 weeks
    • 1400* USD for undergraduate and postgraduate students with valid credential.
    • 1500* USD for alumni and UNAM staff.
    • 1600* USD for external university community.

    ADDITIONAL 10% DISCOUNT FOR STUDENTS WITH A GENERAL AVERAGE OF 9 OR MORE


    At the end of the course, a certificate of participation will be issued by the Mexican Studies Center UNAM-South Africa.

    Only those with a minimum of 80 percent attendance will be provided with a record.

    Pre-registration: From Frebruary 24th to March 13rd.
    Placement Test: From February 25th to March 20th.
    Payment deadline: From March 23rd to April 30th.
    Interviews: From May 25th to 29th.

    Our teachers are qualified to teach English as a foreign language and have extensive experience in the delivery of workshops and courses.

    Course of 3 weeks:
    Start date: 6 July 2020
    End date: 24 July 2020
    The courses last 75 hours over 3 weeks. There are also academic-cultural activities in addition to the course hours.

    Course of 7 weeks:
    Start date: 6 July 2020
    End date: 24 August 2020
    The courses last 140 hours over 7 weeks. There are also academic-cultural activities in addition to the course hours.

    Requirements:

    • Have a valid passport at the time of travel.
    • Apply for a visa at the South African Embassy in Mexico.*
    The visa is free and the required documentation is:
    1. Format visa DHA-84 duly filled. Format Example
    2. Letter of invitation and acceptance of the UNAM (you will be sent to your e-mail once you have finished the registration process).
    3. Copy of receipts for the last three months from those responsible for covering expenditure.
    4. Valid passport and copy.
    5. Copy of the round-trip plane ticket.
    6. Copy of the yellow fever vaccination certificate ONLY if you are travelling through LATAM.
    7. The procedure is free and takes five working days and the time of delivery of documents is from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. No appointment is required.
    • Arrange for international insurance of major medical expenses.
    * It will be your responsibility to manage the tourist visa procedure.

    Send an email to info@sudafrica.unam.mx which the following information:

    • Full name as shown on passport or birth certificate.
    • Date of birth and nationality.
    • Specify the level of English you have. (If you have a certificate include it).
    • Send color photo of the UNAM credential on both sides (only for students, alumni and UNAM teaching staff).
    • Send color photo of your passport.
    • Fill the pre-registration format.
    • Take the placement exam online (grammar exam, will be sent after pre-registration).
    With this pre-registration and online placement information, we will have enough information to know which English language groups we can offer and the level of our students.
    Once we have this information, the second phase of the placement examination will be carried out.
    • For the English courses of development of the four skills, an interview will be conducted by Skype to know your motivation and interests in taking the course as well as to establish your level of oral production in English. The interview will take place with Mtro. David Ruiz Guzmán.
    • For academic English courses, you will be assigned two topics to develop in writing (approximately 1500 words in total). You will also be interviewed in English to know your motivation and interest in taking the course, as well as to establish your level of oral production in English. The interview will be conducted with Dr. Arturo Mendoza Ramos and Mto. David Ruiz Guzman.
    The date of the interviews will be from 25th to 29th of May. (Mexico time). All students will perform this evaluation WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

    If you do not meet this requirement you will lose your registration.

    Once we have more accurately identified your level of English and your contact details, we contact you to notify you if the course you have chosen is available according to the demand.

    The courses will be taught with a minimum of 8 students and the maximum capacity will be 18 students per course.

    When you receive notification from Mr. David Ruiz that you can formalize the registration process, you can make the payment. DO NOT PAY until you have received this notification by e-mail.

    The payment deadline to guarantee the course is April 30th 2020.

    Once you have paid the full amount of the course, you will need to forward the copy of the payment no later than May 4th to this mail: info@sudafrica.unam.mx to continue his registration process.

    Payments will not be accepted after the deadline.
    If you do not do this, you will be NOT OFFICIALLY REGISTERED and will lose your place.
    No refunds, if for any official or legal situation you can not come, Contact directly to Mtro. David Ruiz to know the possible alternatives. IF YOU DO NOT DO YOU WILL LOSE ALL RIGHTS TO YOUR REGISTRATION AND PARTICIPATION.

    Your course registration will be required to continue with the processing of your visa before the Embassy of South Africa in Mexico.

    At the latest, the weekend before the start of your course, you will be informed of the time and place of your FIRST DAY OF CLASSES and WELCOME CEREMONY.

    Its course will run from Monday to Friday in CLASSROOM 5 hours, which will give an average of 25 hours per week and will have ACADEMIC-CULTURAL ACTIVITIES on Wednesdays.

    ONCE YOUR PLACE IS CONFIRMED, make the payment in US dollars.

    For Payments in Mexico, a referenced payment form valid for 5 days will be sent for payment in Bancomer BBVA.

    If you pay from abroad, request the special account for deposit in dollars.
    If you pay from a foreign country, please request the account number for deposits in american dollars.

    UNAM-South Africa will send you accommodation options in the above areas when you send your course confirmation.
    You must choose the type of accommodation that best suits you and make the reservation directly.
